Complementary colors - Color circle & color theory (2022)

4

I mention complementary colors a little now and then and explain quickly in some posts. Here is a post about some color theory, color circle & explanations. So now I thought I would "go to the bottom" with this in a detailed post about complementary colors!

I have also added some extra information on how to mix colors with tips, pictures and video. :)

Table of contents of complementary colors:

  1. Color circle
  2. What are complementary colors?
  3. To highlight another color
  4. Primary colors & secondary colors
  5. Neutralize colors
  6. Conclusion on complementary colors
  7. How to mix colors?

Color circle:

The color circle shows how the colors are connected, and that green turns into blue which turns into purple may not be very interesting, but the color circle is actually a great tool! I have attached a picture of the color circle below, some call these color wheels as well. Further down there is also a color circle for basic colors / primary colors, secondary colors and tertiary colors.

What are complementary colors?

Complementary colors are the colors opposite each other in the color circle, some even call these opposite colors or contrasting colors. You can see that, for example, the blue tones are opposite the yellow, orange tones. Thus, blue is the complementary color to yellow / orange. Green is a complementary color to purple / purple-pink, but a green tone in the blue direction is also a complementary color to red.

Here you see a picture of the complementary colors blue and orange.

To highlight another color:

To highlight another color is done by placing two complementary colors next to each other.

Examples for highlighting colors using complementary colors:

Blue eyes  highlighted by  yellow ,  orange  gold , and  warm brown shades .
Green eyes  highlighted by  lila / lilarosa .
Brown eyes  highlighted by  cool shades such as blue, silver and gray . This is because brown is not included in the color circle but is a mixture of several colors, but since the opposite is highlighted and brown is a warm color, it is highlighted by cold colors.

Here you see a make-up where I highlight my blue eyes with just yellow, orange and warm brown shade.

Primary colors and secondary colors:

  • What are primary colors or base colors? One primary color or primer is a color used for mixing secondary colors or otherwise forms the basis of a color system. These may differ depending on whether it is additive paint mixture or subtractive color mix.
  1. Additive color mixture = colors in TV and monitor. Abbreviated RGB and stands for RED, Green and Blue
  2. Subtrative color mix = colors for e.g. print. Abbreviated CMYK and stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and addition of Black (K = Key-color) Color mix in painting is also Subtrative color mix and the primary colors are Yellow, RED and Blue
  • What are secondary colors? Secondary colors are colors that occur when primary colors or base colors are mixed. Below you see a picture of both RGB (left) and CMYK (right) and how the colors become when they are mixed with each other.
primary colors secondary colors color circle

Neutralize colors:

How to neutralize colors? To neutralize a color, the complementary colors are also used, but then they are applied on each other instead of next to each other and the result is then neutral.

This is because if you mix the three primary colors RED, blue and yellow so it always will be brown / neutral (the other shades in the color circle are obtained by mixing colors, but red blue and yellow can never be obtained by mixing) So if you want to neutralize one of the base colors, you have to add the other two!

Examples of how to neutralize e.g. blue circles under the eyes or a red pimple:

Hide blue circles under the eyes  - neutralized by red and yellow  (= orange)
Cover red pimple or reduce redness on the face  - neutralized by blue and yellow (= green)

Also read my posts I made earlier about reducing redness / covering pimples. You can find the posts here - dampen redness on the face and cover a scarlet pimple.

The conclusion about complementary colors:

Complementary colors on each other - Neutralized.
Complementary colors beside each other - Reinforced.

How to mix colors?

To mix colors in painting, you start from the basic colors (primary colors) yellow, red & blue.

Here you see a color circle with primary colors, secondary colors and tertiary colors:

how to mix colors

Primary colors can not be mixed with other colors but are the basic colors.

You can not mix yellow, red or blue from other colors because these are the basic colors that create the other colors.

Secondary colors mixed by mixing primary colors with each other.

  • Yellow and red turn orange.
  • Red and blue turn purple.
  • Blue and yellow turn green.

Tertiary colors mixed by mixing secondary colors with each other or mixing primary colors and secondary colors.

  • Yellow and orange become light orange.
  • Red and orange become red-orange.
  • Red and purple become red-purple.
  • Blue and purple become blue-purple.
  • Blue and green become blue-green.
  • Yellow and green turn yellow-green.

What colors do you mix to get brown?

Depending on what brown color you are looking for, it is a little different how you mix brown color. As a basis for mixing the color brown, you can start from the colors red and green in equal parts.

What color will it be if you mix red and green? Equal parts red and green to mix brown.

To then get lighter, darker or redder brown colors, just add other colors. You can use this color generator to try mixing different colors online, click here.

The simple answer for which colors turn brown is red and green.

Then you get different shades from brown color scale so you can mix a little whatever. Here you have a film when an artist creates different shades of brown.

What colors do you mix to get blue?

Blue is a base color and can not be mixed.

What colors do you mix to get pink?

Red and white give pink, if you want a more peach pink you can mix in a little yellow. For a more purple pink, mix in a little blue.

What happens if you mix all the colors?

If you mix all the color colors together, it will be black because you have created a substance that absorbs all the colors and for us, the absence of light is seen as black.

So what colors do you mix to get black are all! :)

Eyeliner without wing + glitter

I have shown a lot of glitter and eyeliner in various posts lately and now I was asked if I can show a sharp eyeliner without a wing with glitter.

Of course I can! :)

TIP! A glitter line over the eyeliner can look more advanced than just eyeliner, but it is also a good trick if you have difficulty getting the eyeliner even. The liquid glitter is easier to apply evenly than a carbon black and razor-sharp eyeliner, so glitter can actually be used to camouflage a shaky eyeliner!

  2. Liquid glitter, Pixi Liquid Fairy Lights (PassionLight) painted with a separate eyeliner brush, e.g. Nanshy Eyeliner brush
  3. Black mascara on the upper lashes, Magnetic lash mascara

Clear!

My waterline is tattooed light. So for exactly the same eyes, you can supplement with glo Skin Beauty Eye Pencil (Peach) too.

Pixi Natural Brow Duo (Video + instructions)

How the brow pen Natural Brow Duo from Pixi just got the name "natural brow" is not difficult to understand. It is incredibly easy to use and gives a very natural and nice result!

I have been using this pen + gel for several years now and we have lots of regular customers who buy it regularly, it is SO good!

In this video I show how I usually use it and some bonus tips on how to get the brow shape :)

What is Pixi Natural Brow Duo?

A brow pencil at one end and a lightly colored brow at the other end.

The pen has a triangular shape, which makes it easy to fill in a soft and natural way without it becoming too "painted".

The brow gel is lightly colored, not like a brow mascara but just a tiny bit, which emphasizes the straws (perfect on thin straws!) And makes the straws lie nicely combed all day!

The result is also waterproof and fits great all day!

Natural Brow Duo

It fits all eyebrows, but above all I recommend it to people who have some of their own straws and want to emphasize the shape in a natural way!

Shades of the brow pencil

It is currently available in three different colors.

Natural brown is cold and I use it for light eyebrows.

Deep brunette is dark brown, but if you are light on the hand, it will be quite light as well. I therefore usually recommend it to all eyebrow customers who color their eyebrows dark, because after the coloring it is perfect, but then when the color releases, it also fits if you are a little lighter on the hand only :)

Soft black is a cool dark brown shade. Perfect if you want very dark eyebrows without them getting hot.

Pixi Natural Brow Duo Reviews

As I said, we have many regular customers who buy this regularly and it is the absolute best review! You know such a product that you use up over and over again and do not want to live without :)

It is sold most at the salon because we use it on our brow customers, but also in the webshop it has received 5-star reviews:

My eyebrows

I used this all the time before, but since I cut my obsessive straws so much, I did not have much use for the broth. Therefore, I switched to our other brow pencils.

BUT NOW when I do the brow lift I also have great use of the bryngelen and love it !! It highlights the straws so nicely! They look so fluffy like :) I've never been able to have my eyebrows before ♥

Makeover makeup + hair

You know how you can sometimes feel yourself looking in the mirror and asking "what happened?" because there are so many things that are not top notch at the same time. You just want a makeover!

So I had last weekend. I felt pale and dull, my skin was unclean, my brow lift had gone out so my eyebrows hung long down to my eyes. I have not done anything with the nails for several months and the hair had grown long + that I was not allowed to use silver shampoo or color wraps for 2 months before the hairdresser's visit so the tone is like this ..

But since I had actually booked a hairdresser's visit and was going to deal with all the other circumstances at the same time, I got the brilliant idea that you should follow my makeover step by step! :)

I still looked nice of course but was not directly pissed off by what I saw in the mirror if you say so;) Beauty is wellness, I feel so much more alert when I enjoy how I look. When the outside reflects the inside!

1. Eyebrow plucking

I cleaned all the brows, away with all the little hairs! There was also a cleansing of the groin on the upper lip.

2. Brow lift

Now that I know how nice my eyebrows can be, I can not stop with brow lift! I love it! :)

3. Hair care & skin care

  • Wash your hair. I also had deep cleansing shampoo that removes coatings and residues. Perfect before visiting the hairdresser! Just that step gave the hair a finer tone.
  • Exfoliate the face, remove with all impurities!
  • Face mask - I tested Pixi's New sheet mask. Whether this news qualifies in our web shop or not? To be continued ;)

4. Manicure

While the face mask did its thing, I painted my nails in a bright dark pink color. Good spring!

Clean and fresh!

5. Makeup

I also flattened my hair because since I have permanent hair, I wanted to simplify for the hairdresser.

Then it was time for the makeup! It turned out to be a pretty natural look :)

6. Hairdresser visit !!!

No but Monica Werner on Color and the Shape is a MAGICIAN! She is cruel at balayage, blonde tones, pastels and crazy colors.

Make-up with glitter step by step

Here is a post with a yellow and turquoise makeup with glitter in step by step. :)

We at the salon received such a wonderful message, one who wrote that she loves that we continue to post pictures despite the difficult time for all companies now. There are so many companies that just "disappear" now but we do the exact opposite, we push, market and continue to inspire!

You have no idea what it's hot ♥ Doing everything we can right now helps not only the company but also ourselves and our motivation! Had we lay down and given up, save what can be saved, then I would have felt so bad now. But we are fighting!

… And we do it with our heads held high and our faces full of color and glitter! :)

Attach loose glitter, is it difficult to do a make-up with glitter?

No, not with the right products!

  1. Moisten your brush with the liquid Kryolan Cake Liner Sealer. It is not really made to attach glitter, I myself have realized how clean it is for that :)
  2. Gently dip the brush in the glitter
  3. Dab on the eye / face / where you want the glitter

It attaches immediately, dries immediately and then it sits like a slap all day!

Attach loose glitter, is it bad for the environment?

No, not with the right products!

Mood Wood Natural Glitter is biodegradable in nature (compared to small pieces of plastic that ordinary glitter is) and is made of wood!

EASY for me to go all in on makeup this Easter! There are many now who have a lot of time left, so do you! :) Fake freckles, yellow eye shadow (great as a nap in the corner of the eye only if you do not want much), pastel-purple and summery lip colors! How nice !? ♥

I actually have a yellow jumpsuit too, and a yellow-orange scarf. Now damn haha!
